Student Activities

With the understanding that many of our graduates will initially find employment with business and government organizations, and that eventually many will pursue advanced degrees, attend law school or acquire additional professional training, it is our goal to provide the solid foundation of knowledge and practical experience they will need to succeed no matter what they choose.

Outside of the classroom, our students are encouraged to join related student and professional organizations such as:

  • Financial Management Association
The goal of the Financial Management Association is to serve our members and Ohio University by developing professional and social skills outside the walls of the classroom. We are a diverse group of students gathered together to help each other succeed within the corporate environment. The benefits of membership include exposure to the financial industry, networking opportunities, and affiliation with our international chapter. Our organization is open to Ohio University business majors and business minors with an interest in business and finance.
  • OU Student Equity Management Group
The Ohio University Student Equity Management Group manages an equity portfolio of $1.3 million of the university's assets under a concentrated portfolio strategy. It is directed at generating consistent risk-adjusted returns in excess of broader equity benchmarks. Since its 2001 inception, the fund has generated approximately $300,000 in capital gains and $47,104 of dividend income, which supports scholarships, research grants, and other initiatives of the Ohio University Foundation.
  • Gamma Iota Sigma (Insurance honor society)
Students interested in the insurance industry meet weekly to explore and discuss insurance trends and career paths. Activities include guest speakers, on-site company visits, and attendance at international conferences. Dues are $10.00 each quarter.
  • The Student Fixed Income Management Group
The Student Fixed Income Management Group manages a $2 million portfolio of fixed income securities for the Ohio University Foundation. Students in this organization learn research and investment methodologies to strategically manage fixed income investment portfolios . The group conducts regular conference calls with alumni and investment professionals to discuss current economic events and investment strategy. The group also gains exposure to investment banks and investment management firms through annual networking trips. This is a great opportunity for underclassmen to get involved and gain experience in the financial markets. The group is open to students of any age, but must be in the College of Business and have a GPA of at least a 3.0.
