International Business Certificate Program Application
The International Business Certificate is available as an option in any baccalaureate degree program offered by OHIO University, regardless of the college in which the student is enrolled. It is intended to assist students in acquiring the skills and experiences that will enhance their success in international and cross-cultural business contexts, both domestically and abroad (e.g., working with foreign suppliers, customers, employees, or partners; understanding challenges and opportunities of foreign markets; recognizing and assessing implications of internationalization of competition in foreign and domestic markets).
The International Business Certificate program consists of fifteen semester hours (five three-credit semester courses), including four required courses and one elective course. This program of study will help ensure that students learn the basic issues involved with international business, while maintaining flexibility in adapting the program to the student’s particular area(s) of interest.
The courses will include coverage of: (1) the complex and changing environmental forces that impact international business and how companies can effectively adapt to these forces, (2) tools for assessing the attractiveness of potential international markets as well as the alternatives for entering and expanding within these markets, (3) differences in cultures and their impact on the leadership and management practices that will promote success in international business, and (4) practical, hands-on experiential exercises and activities that are designed to internalize the capabilities and mindset required for success in international business.
The International Business Certificate will be awarded only to students who have been accepted into the program and who have fulfilled all certificate requirements. An overall G.P.A. of 2.50 for the 15 credit hours of International Business Certificate courses is necessary in order for the certificate to be awarded.
To apply for admission to the International Business Certificate program, please complete the following steps:
1. Complete the online application, including a 200-300 word essay illustrating your interest in and commitment to developing an improved understanding of and ability to work effectively in international and cross-cultural business contexts. This essay should describe any international experiences you have had (travel, personal, professional, educational), foreign language training you may have completed, and how you intend to apply what you have learned from your experiences to a career involving international business activities.
2. Submit to the Center for International Business Education and Development (CIBED), Copeland Hall Suite 401 or IB@ohio.edu the following two items:
- A copy of the applicant's most recent DARS report indicating an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher;

After completing all of the above, each applicant must complete an interview, if requested, with one or more appointed representatives of the International Business Certificate program. These interviews will not be scheduled until all of the other required admission materials have been submitted to the Center for International Business Education and Development.
