Norm O'Reilly brings extensive research, teaching, and industry experience to role

January 30, 2014

The Ohio University College of Business welcomes Norm O’Reilly as professor and chair of the Department for Sports Administration, ranked the #1 Graduate Program in the world in 2012 and 2013 by SportBusiness International. O’Reilly, who holds MBA and Ph.D. degrees and the CGA accounting designation, is an accomplished scholar and business professional. He comes to OHIO from the University of Ottawa where he specialized in sport business and taught sport management, sport marketing and sport finance.
O’Reilly is one of the world’s leading scholars in sport business, having published five books and 70 manuscripts in peer-reviewed management journals. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. As a senior adviser with TrojanOne, a Toronto-headquartered marketing agency, O’Reilly also works with corporations and properties on revenue generation and sponsorship.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. O’Reilly to the Ohio University College of Business,” said Hugh Sherman, dean of the College of Business. “Norm brings academic and research excellence coupled with the industry experience and close business relationships that we know will benefit the students in the Department of Sports Administration.”

O’Reilly was recently named one of the “Five to Watch” in sport business in Canada by the Globe and Mail and is a lifetime Research Fellow of the North American Society for Sport Management. Prior to his term at the University of Ottawa, O’Reilly taught at the David Falk Center for Sport Management at Syracuse University, the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, the Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University, and the School of Sports Administration at Laurentian University.

As the new department chair, O’Reilly will take a leadership role in ensuring the continued success of OHIO’s college graduates by recruiting outstanding faculty, maintaining a professionally relevant curriculum and creating student opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in real-world situations.

“I am thrilled to be a part of OHIO’s College of Business and Department of Sports Administration,” he said. “As the first academic program in the field of sport management and one of the top ranked anywhere, it’s been recognized as a premier professional training program for those seeking careers in the sport industry. I’m proud to join an exceptional team of outstanding teacher-scholars and practicing professionals.”
