Dr. Andrew Kreutzer honored for program leadership October 2, 2013
The Ohio University College of Business’s Center for Sports Administration announces Dr. Andrew Kreutzer ('80) as the 2014 recipient of the Charles R. Higgins Distinguished Alumnus Award.
"It is more than an honor to be selected as the 2014 Charles R. Higgins Distinguished Alumnus recipient," Kreutzer said. "I have spent 34 years in the company of so many wonderful people, all a result of my association with the Ohio University program. It is humbling to be considered with those graduates who have been honored in the past, and I look forward my opportunity to thank everyone at Symposium in May."
Kreutzer completed his Master in Sports Administration degree in 1980 at Ohio University. He remained on campus until 1983 to complete his Ph.D. Since then, Kreutzer has served in higher education athletic administration at Mankato State University in Minnesota and St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. In 1986, he transitioned to academics full-time and returned to Athens in 1995 to serve as coordinator of sports administration at Ohio University. During his 10 years overseeing the program, Kreutzer
built the undergraduate sports management program and continued to grow the graduate program. He was responsible for developing the partnership with the
College of Business, and establishing the dual MBA and MSA degree that launched in 2002.
“Our graduate program is ranked number one in the world. It would not be the academically rigorous, selective program it is today without Dr. Kreutzer’s vision and leadership,” said James Kahler, executive director of the Center for Sports Administration.
With Kahler’s appointment as executive director for the Center for Sports Administration in 2005, Kreutzer became a full-time instructor. He most recently served as chair of the Department of Sports Administration from 2012-13.
"I am very appreciative of everything that Andy has done for the Sports Administration program and for the mentorship that he has provided me over the years," Kahler said.
The Charles R. Higgins Distinguished Alumnus Award is presented annually to a graduate of the Ohio University Sports Administration program that has positively impacted the sports industry and the community. The award was founded in 1982 in honor of Dr. Charles Higgins, former program director and professor emeritus.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award is officially presented to the honoree during Symposium weekend held each spring at Ohio University. Along with a variety of events held for the alumni and current students, the weekend is closed out with a keynote speech by the distinguished alumnus.
