Consul General Roy Norton discusses US trade with Canada

September 24, 2013

The Ohio University College of Business and College of Arts and Sciences will host Consul General of Canada Roy B. Norton for a discussion titled, “The World’s Largest Trading Relationship: How the United States and Canada Built It – and Where It’s Headed.”  The event will be held Thurs., Oct. 3 at 3:30 p.m. Baker University Center’s Multicultural Center, room 218.

According to the 2012 census, U.S. merchandise trade with Canada totaled $324.2 billion in imports and $272.4 billion in exports.  The trade relationship encompasses all industries and is vital to both nation’s success. As the Consul General of Canada based in Detroit, Norton represents Canada in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, where he oversees and promotes Canadian interests principally in trade, investment, the environment, culture and academic relations.

“No two countries enjoy a more extensive or deeper relationship than Canada and the USA,” Norton said. “Businesses in Canada and the mid-western USA ‘make things together’ notably, but not exclusively, in the automotive sector.  The border serv

es to facilitate an ever-more integrated, two-directional supply chain.”

The lecture will explore these themes further.

“Ohio University facilitates a global conversation,” said Lorna Jean Edmonds, vice provost for global affairs. “Consul General Norton’s visit is significant to the University and will be relevant to students, faculty, staff, and the community seeking to understand the far reaching historical and economic impact of this country’s largest trading partner.”

In addition to leading the lecture on Oct. 3, Norton will also be visit the University’s Innovation Center and tour the local business community.
