Global Consulting Program September 6, 2013
College of Business students gain international experiences during summer Global Consulting Program
Some students spent the summer hanging out with friends or lying by the pool perfecting their tans. Others took the opportunity to meet new people, immerse themselves in different cultures, and apply classroom knowledge to real world business problems.
When students returned to Ohio University’s Athens campus last week, 135 of them brought back new perspectives. Students visited one of nine countries including Brazil, China, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia, and Spain as part of the College of Business’s Global Consulting Program.
“It’s hard to describe how amazing my experience was,” said Rachael Tovtin, a senior studying marketing. “It was an amazing learning event that everyone should try and take part of through their college experience.”
The Global Consulting Program is specifically designed to prepare students for the global business environment they will encounter upon graduation. The program is offered through the College of Business’s Center for International Business Education and Development, and partners Ohio University students with students in one of the nine countries to solve business problems for international clients.
“A global business experience like this changes the conversation in and out of the classroom,” said Dr. Michael Geringer, director of the Center for International Business Education and Development. “Going abroad and participating in this kind of rigorous educational experience changes the nature of discussion. We bring diverse viewpoints together in a cross-cultural consulting team to put knowledge from the classroom into action.”
Programs range in length from two to nine weeks and fulfill the College of Business internship and global perspective requirements. The next opportunity to join a GCP immersion trip is over winter break in Nicaragua and applications for summer programs are now being accepted. “My experiences in Italy caused to me grow, not only as a student, but as an individual,” said Sarah Richards, a junior studying marketing. “I would have never had the chance to take a trip like this, this early in life, without Ohio University. I spent five weeks in Italy. During these five weeks I saw amazing things and met amazing people. I also learned a lot about myself.”
