Teaching Assistance Employment Overview

OU MIS undergraduate Teaching Assistants fulfill an important role in supporting the teaching mission of the MIS department. Furthermore, the role of a TA provides a significant development opportunity for our students. Below are some guidelines to best utilize our undergraduate TAs and best support them and accelerate their development.

Who is eligible?

  • MIS majors who are Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, MIS GPA of 3.3
  • Received an A or B+ in the course they are supporting

What are the responsibilities of the TA?

A TA may be asked to participate in any of the following activities:

  • Assist/lead lab sessions
  • Lead help sessions/meetings
  • Grade objective quizzes and assignments focusing on remembering or explaining. Faculty will provide explicit grading expectations and rubrics for assignments and quizzes
  • Participate in simulations or role play for class activities
  • Manage Blackboard and other course records

How do I apply for a TA position?

  • A student may request to be considered for a TA position to the MIS department or a faculty member at any time
  • The MIS department will put out a call for TA’s on week 11 or 12 for the following semester to generate interest if TA positions are available. Interested candidates may apply.

How does the formal hiring and payroll process work?

  • Once a students is hired they must complete paperwork provided by Connie Sharp (MIS Office Administrator Copeland 209)
  • Each TA must submit a timesheet signed and dated by their faculty member in order to be paid biweekly. Time sheets must be signed by noon the Monday following the pay period per the payroll schedule attached. This process is through email.
  • Faculty will communicate regularly with their TA’s
  • Each faculty member will track their utilization of their TA hours in order not to exceed their allocated hours
  • Each TA will also complete a confidentiality agreement and the expectations document before they can proceed

What about training and development?

  • TA’s (new and returning) will be required to attend a training session specified each semester.
  • The training will be based on general expectations, instructional knowledge, and professionalism
  • Each faculty member is encouraged to specify their unique set of expectations and training in addition to the general orientation and development session conducted by the department.

There will be 2 developmental workshops for TA’s to attend every semester
