International Business Certificate

The International Business Certificate is available as an option in any baccalaureate degree program offered by OHIO University, regardless of the college in which the student is enrolled.  It is intended to assist students in acquiring the skills and experiences that will enhance their success in international and cross-cultural business contexts, both domestically and abroad (e.g., working with foreign suppliers, customers, employees, or partners; understanding challenges and opportunities of foreign markets; recognizing and assessing implications of internationalization of competition in foreign and domestic markets).

Requirements for Earning the Certificate

The International Business Certificate program consists of fifteen semester hours (five three-credit semester courses), including four required courses and one elective course (described below). This program of study will help ensure that students learn the basic issues involved with international business, while maintaining flexibility in adapting the program to the student’s particular area(s) of interest.

The courses will include coverage of: (1) the complex and changing environmental forces that impact international business and how companies can effectively adapt to these forces, (2) tools for assessing the attractiveness of potential international markets as well as the alternatives for entering and expanding within these markets, (3) differences in cultures and their impact on the leadership and management practices that will promote success in international business, and (4) practical, hands-on experiential exercises and activities that are designed to internalize the capabilities and mindset required for success in international business.

The 15 semester credit hours required for completion of the International Business Certificate are comprised of the following:

1.  Students MUST complete the following courses for 12 credit hours:

  • MGT3600 Introduction to International Business
  • MGT3650 International Market Assessment & Entry
  • MGT4640 Cross-Cultural Leadership & Management
  • BA 4915 International Business Experience (completed through participation in the Global Consulting Program, OHIO International Consulting Program, or other approved activity)

2.  Students must complete 3 additional credit hours of approved international business immersion experience. This may be completed through one of the following options:
