Ohio University Once Again Leads the Nation in the Formation

of Sport Management Professional Fraternity

The students in the undergraduate Sport Management program at Ohio University have formed the nation’s first Sport Management Professional Fraternity. The fraternity, ΣΑΣΜ (Sigma Alpha Sigma Mu), becomes the third student-run Sport Management organization within the College of Business.

The purpose of this fraternity is to provide a platform for highly involved and academically focused Sport Management students to prepare and develop professionally for a career in the sports industry. Sigma Alpha Sigma Mu strives to benefit not only its members, but also all Ohio University Sport Management students in general.

The primary benefits of Sigma Alpha Sigma Mu are professional development and academic advancement. Non-members still have opportunities for academic advancement via Sigma Alpha Sigma Mu sponsored events and study sessions. Overall, Sigma Alpha Sigma Mu will assist the Ohio University Department of Sports Administration in continuing to develop industry-ready future sport professionals.

Sigma Alpha Sigma Mu’s first rush recruitment begins with applications and interviews for membership commencing the week of Monday January 23. Membership applications are open to current freshmen, sophomore and junior students. An official announcement will be made today to Ohio University Sport Management students following a presentation by Mr. Mark Shapiro, President of Cleveland Indians Inc.

The inaugural offices for Sigma Alpha Sigma Mu will be filled by its founders; Douglas Vinci will serve as President, Marcya Betts as Vice President and Dustin Boucher as Treasurer. Dr. Ming Li, the Chair of the Department of Sports Administration, will serve as the Advisor.
